Air Canada Crash Landing: Passengers Were 'Lucky,' Officials Say

PHOTO: An Air Canada plane crashed landed at the Halifax international airport on March 29, 2015, injuring several people on board.
An Air Canada jet attempting to land at the Halifax international airport this morning touched down about 1,100 feet before the runway, damaging the landing gear, ripping off the nose cone, mangling one wing and engine and ripping off the other before it skidded to a stop, officials said.
Twenty-five people on board the Air Canada A320 were injured in the hard landing after the jet hit an array antenna on the ground. Considering the considerable damage to the plane, it was fortunate that no one was seriously hurt, officials said.
"They touched down 1,100 feet before the runway," Michael Cunningham of the Transportation Safety Board of Canada said. "I'd say they are pretty lucky."
The landing gear came off after the plane hit the runway, according to Cunningham, and the plane then skidded another 1,100 feet on its belly before it came to a stop. The passengers were then evacuated, Cunningham said.
"Didn't hesitate -- just jumped out onto the wing, we started running away from the plane," passenger Dominic Stettler said.
The underside of the plane suffered significant damage, Cunningham said. The nose cone broke off and one of the plane's two engines detached.
"I was really scared," Leon Yu said. "We slid down a thing, and we saw the engine a couple hundred feet from the plane."

Of the 25 passengers and crew members who were hospitalized, all but one had been released as of Sunday afternoon, according to Air Canada.
The TSB will have about 12 to 15 investigators at the scene on Monday.
"It's too early to draw any conclusions about this occurrence," Cunningham said this afternoon.
The black boxes have been recovered and are heading to Ottawa to be analyzed, Cunningham said.

Fire trucks and an airport shuttle are on the scene at the Halifax International Airport early Sunday March 29, 2015 after an Air Canada flight from Toronto made an abrupt landing and left the runway in bad weather.
Halifax Stanfield International Airport spokesman Peter Spurway said the pilots were in control of the plane up until the hard landing.
Spurway said there was snow on the runway but it hadn't yet been determined whether that was a factor in the hard landing. The airport also suffered a power interruption around the same time of the incident, but it was unclear whether the two events were related.
"It was safe to land in this weather," said Air Canada Chief Operating Officer Klaus Goersch.
The pilots are 15-year veterans of Air Canada, Goersch added, with "many years" of experience flying the A320.
Goersch said that the plane was checked Saturday, which was its most recent scheduled maintenance check.
The airport was closed to all air traffic for several hours after the crash before reopening.

Mexican wrestler dies following match with ex-WWE superstar Rey Mysterio

Tragic news out of Mexico as Asistencia Asesoria y Administracion wrestler Pedro Aguayo Ramirez (better known as Hijo del Perro Aguayo) died Friday night in Tijuana while taking part in a tag-team match with former WWE performer Rey Mysterio.
Mysterio delivered a dropkick and landed his patented “619” on Ramirez — a move where a wrestler has his head draped on the second rope and receives a kick to the face. Unfortunately the move didn’t go off as planned. Via PWTorch.com:
According to news reports, El Hijo took the 619 in the trachea trying to avoid the move, causing severe whiplash. El Hijo was placed on a backbrace by paramedics and taken out of the Municipal Auditorium arena to Del Prado hospital.

The Zeta publication initially reported that El Hijo was stabilized at the hospital after losing consciousness. However, local news outlet El-Mexicano.com reported that El Hijo was pronounced dead around 1:00 a.m. local time. Zeta followed up with a headline story also reporting that El Hijo died early Saturday morning.
UPDATE (8:15 p.m. ET)Figure Four Online is reporting that Ramirez (Aguayo Jr.) might have already been knocked out before Mysterio delivered the "619.":Whiplash injury may be cause of Mexican wrestler’s deathMexican Wrestler Killed In The RingTransvestites wrestle for place in Mexican lucha libre
Aguayo Jr. had gotten back in the ring after taking a spinning head scissors where he bumped to the floor from Rey Mysterio Jr. Mysterio Jr. gave him a low dropkick to the back to set up the 619.  It is not clear whether Aguayo Jr. was selling or not when he first hit the ropes to get ready for the 619.  He may have already been injured falling on the ropes, or, while selling, and being positioned badly, when Manik fell into the ropes to set up a double 619 spot, that was when the ropes whiplashed him, although it was likely the first spot immediately.
Sources who were at Hospital del Prado in Tijuana have said that the initial cause of death was cervical spine trauma coming from when the ropes snapped his neck.
He was already out when Mysterio went for the 619 and Mysterio Jr. saw he was in trouble and didn't hit him.  The belief was he was knocked out and they continued the match, although went right to the finish.
The match, put on by CRASH wrestling, went on for several minutes before Ramirez, 35, received medical assistance. You can watch video of the final moments of the match here.
The Baja California state prosecutor's office has opened an investigation into possible manslaughter, per the Associated Press. Friday was only Mysterio’s second time wrestling following his departure from World Wrestling Entertainment in February.
The son of lucha libre legend Pedro Aguayo, Ramirez started his wrestling career at the age of 15 in Mexico teaming with his father and would go on to become a three-time Mexican National Tag Team champion. Along with wrestling in AAA and CMLL (Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre), Aguayo Jr. started his own promotion called Perros del Mal.
AAA released a statement on its website that translates to: "Lucha Libre AAA feels much the loss of one of their star talent, praying for the repose of Pedro Aguayo Ramírez, in addition to the early resignation of his relatives. We thank the media support, understanding, respect and discretion at such a difficult time."
Several wrestlers tweeted their condolences, including TJ Perkins, who was one of the wrestlers in the match:

Electing Buhari as president, disaster for Africa says Ex US envoy

Richard Grenell

A former spokesman for four United States Ambassadors to the United Nations, Richard Grenell, has said that if former military Head of State, General Muhammadu Buhari, emerges as the next president of Nigeria in next Saturday’s elections, it would be a disaster for the entire African continent. Grenell, who made the declaration in a piece titled: Nigeria on the brink, and which was published in the Washington Times, a US based publication, of Thursday, March 19, 2015, described Buhari as working tirelessly to enthrone Sharia law across the country, which he said would further pose a major challenge to the fight against terrorism in Nigeria and the continent at large. He said, “Western foreign policy observers pre-occupied with the rise of ISIS in the Middle East should wake up to the reality unfolding in Nigeria. Opposition candidate General Buhari wants Sharia law throughout Nigeria. In fact, he wants it everywhere. “Is this an indication that Buhari supports violence because the end goal of the terrorist attacks throughout Nigeria and Africa is an Islamic state? It is a legitimate question that should be asked by leaders of the Obama administration. “Boko Haram has pledged its allegiance and support to ISIS. The Northern Nigerian based Islamic terrorist group wants Sharia law throughout the country and beyond. They are also actively terrorising Chad, Niger and Cameroon with their goal of an Islamic state. “Buhari has also spoken sympathetically about members of the terrorist group Boko Haram, has cautioned against a rush to judgement on its members and has personally been selected by the terrorist group to lead its negotiations with the Government of Nigeria. “Buhari’s election as Nigeria’s head of state would be a disaster for Africa. It would also signal trouble for the West’s fight against ISIS and terrorism throughout the Middle East.” According to Grenell, incumbent president and Buhari’s main rival at next Saturday’s election, Goodluck Jonathan has made commendable inroads in strangling Boko Haram to submission in recent weeks and so deserves the support of the Barack Obama led United States administration and the rest of the world. “The Nigerian economy has been growing faster than South Africa’s. Imagine what Nigeria could do for Africa if it was also free of Boko Haram’s violence. The Obama Administration should be doing more to ensure Africa’s most populous country doesn’t slip away,” he said. Speaking further, Grenell said that with the election in Israel over, the West must quickly turn its attention to Nigeria where the outcome of next Saturday’s presidential elections could have a profound impact on the future of Africa. “Islamic radicals have Africa on their target list and young Nigerians are reported to be interested in ISIS’ messages. Nigeria is at a tipping point. The West, and specifically the Obama Administration, needs to wake up to the growing problem,” he said. In October 2014 during an interview with TheCable, an online news platform, Buhari had said that he was not a religious fundamentalist or extremist as his opponents had alleged and that all those trying to hang such malicious tag on him were merely attempting to demonise and tarnish his image. “Nigerians will always uncover impossible room for manoeuvre for politicians. In 2003, I chose Chuba Okadigbo as my running mate. He was a Roman Catholic. He was an Igbo. In 2007, I picked Edwin Ume-Ezeoke. He was a Roman Catholic. He was an Igbo. And in 2010, I chose even a pastor, Pastor Tunde Bakare. “Honestly, what do Nigerians want me to do? If they don’t believe I’m not a fundamentalist, what else can I do? The era of short-changing people in the name of religion should stop,” he had said. Agency report

Jason Worilds quits NFL to knock on doors as a Jehovah's Witness.

Picture
Jason Worilds
Jason Worilds gave up playing football for millions of dollars to follow his faith. Wednesday Worilds announced he was leaving the Pitsburg Stealers NFL team to further his work as a witness of Jehovah.

He informed the Steelers of his retirement in a phone call Tuesday, the day he became an unrestricted free agent and one of the top linebackers available for any team to sign. The Steelers were hoping to lure him back with a multi-year contract after they paid him nearly $10 million in 2014. His 7½ sacks tied for the team lead in 2014 from his outside linebacker position.

Why is Worilds walking away from the game? According to Ed Bouchette of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Worilds is doing so to work for his religion, Jehovah's Witnesses.
The Steelers released a statement on the matter Tuesday:

"We respect his decision to retire and thank him for his five years in Pittsburgh. We wish him the best in his future endeavors."

After racking up 15.5 sacks with consistent quarterback pressure over the past two seasons, Worilds entered the new league year No. 10 on Around The NFL's list of the Top 101 free agents.

If this is the end, Worilds will finish his five-year career with 204 tackles with 25.5 sacks.

Worilds - “I appreciate all of the interest from the organizations that have reached out to us the past few days,’’ Worilds wrote on Twitter early Wednesday morning. “With that being said, after much thought & consideration I have chosen to step away from football as I have opted to pursue other interests.
“I am especially grateful of the opportunity to play before some of the greatest fans in football today. Despite any concern and speculation that may ensue, I appreciate those that are respectful of my decision.”

Megachurch Pastor Seeks Donations for Pricey Private Jet

Creflo Dollar

The ministry of a prominent Georgia megachurch pastor and evangelist who teaches that God wants to bless the faithful with earthly riches is seeking donations to buy a luxury jet valued at more than $65 million.
The website of Creflo Dollar Ministries asked people Friday to "Sow your love gift of any amount" to help the ministry buy a Gulfstream G650 airplane. Dollar and his wife, Taffi, are co-pastors of World Changers International Church in College Park, just south of Atlanta.
Dollar is one of the most prominent African-American preachers based around Atlanta who have built successful ministries on the prosperity gospel. Ministers in this tradition often hold up their own wealth as evidence that the teaching works.
The ministry's current plane, acquired in 1999, was built in 1984, has traveled more than 4 million miles and is no longer safe, spokesman Juda Engelmayer said. On a recent trip overseas, one of the engines failed, but the pilot was able to land safely and no one was injured, the ministry's website says.
"(W)e are asking members, partners, and supporters of this ministry to assist us in acquiring a Gulfstream G650 airplane so that Pastors Creflo and Taffi and World Changers Church International can continue to blanket the globe with the Gospel of grace," the ministry's website says.
Gulfstream's website lists an asking price of $67,950,000 for a G650 with a flight record of 1,616 hours and 625 landings since it entered service in mid-December.
Members of the ministry travel for much of the year bringing their message, food and supplies to people around the world, Engelmayer said. They need a plane that's fuel efficient, faster, with enough cargo capacity and enough seats, he said.
The G650 "flies at more than 92 percent of the speed of sound," typically holds about 18 seated passengers and can take off with a maximum weight of 99,600, according to Gulfstream's website.
Numerous online reports quoted the ministry website as saying: "We are believing for 200,000 people to give contributions of 300 US dollars or more to turn this dream into a reality."
On Friday afternoon, that line was gone, and the website instead said: "Your love gift of any amount will be greatly appreciated."
When asked about the change, Engelmayer replied in an email: "The ministry operates on the goodness of its followers and has always been a donor based organization. Every gift given is heartfelt and appreciated, and people who wish will give at the level comfortable to their situation and ability."
Soon after that, the website's entire page about the plane appeared disabled.
Dollar, who has five children, is a native of College Park and says he received a vision for the church in 1986. He held the first service in front of eight people in an elementary school cafeteria. His ministry grew quickly and the church moved into its current 8,500-seat sanctuary, on Dec. 24, 1995.
Dollar said in a 2007 interview with The Associated Press that he renounced his church salary, and his income comes only from personal investments, including a real estate business and horse breeding company called Dollar Ranch. He's also published more than 30 books, focusing mostly on family and life issues, including debt management.
He said he can get up to $100,000 for a single appearance on his packed schedule of speaking engagements.

I'm the best in the world Says Jose Mourinho

Mourinho: I'm the best in the world
The Portuguese has compared his record with that of his peers and maintains that he is the best manager in the world, before laying down a challenge to his team
Jose Mourinho says there is no manager in England who is anywhere near as good as he is.

The Blues were sent crashing out of the Champions League on Wednesday, losing to Paris Saint-Germain on away goals, but they have a chance to move eight points clear of Manchester City in the Premier League with victory over Southampton on Sunday.

And although Mourinho was left disappointed by Chelsea's exit to PSG, he maintains he is in a league of his own.

He told reporters: “People are too worried about me. They don’t know what my happiness is. My happiness, first of all, is when I compare myself with the others. I see just a few that are with me in terms of success.

“And the others I see a huge difference, a huge distance, with all the respect that they deserve, this is not a fight with them, I have lots of respect for all of them.

“But in the Premier League, who is European champion? Me and Van Gaal. Right? In the Premier League, how many won the Premier League twice or more than twice? Mr Wenger and myself.

“How many won every competition in this country? Community Shield, Capital One Cup, FA Cup, Premier League. How many? How many?

“You go to Europe, how many won seven league titles? How many won two Champions Leagues? Ancelotti wins three, Van Gaal two and Pep [Guardiola] has two. I am not content with that, but you are too worried about myself.

“What makes me feel special is that I am above all of this. You think I care with some b******t I read? Do you think I care? I don’t care.”

Chelsea have two games in hand over Manuel Pellegrini's side, following City's surprise 1-0 loss at Burnley on Saturday, leaving Mourinho in no doubt of what the Blues must do to win the Premier League.

“I think we need nine victories,” Mourinho stated. “Eleven matches. I think we need nine victories.

"We have to focus on nine victories. If our direct opponents lose a couple of points, then you need eight victories and one draw or something like that, but at the moment we have to focus on nine victories.”
