Xenophobia: South Africa Condemns Nigeria’s Decision To Recall Its Ambassador

South Africa has condemned Nigeria’s decision to recall its ambassador over a spate of attacks against foreigners. It called the step “unfortunate and regrettable” and said it “would be curious for a sisterly country to want to exploit such a painful episode”.
At least seven people have died over a month of attacks on foreigners and foreign-owned property in South Africa. Zulu King Goodwill Zwelithini has been blamed for sparking the attacks with comments about foreign workers. Soldiers were deployed to flashpoints last week to prevent more violence. Some blamed the attacks – which centred on Durban and Johannesburg – on unemployment and poor political leadership.
Thousands were displaced, with many Zimbabweans, Mozambicans, Malawians and others returning home and others taking refuge in temporary government-operated shelters.
‘Ongoing xenophobia’
Some governments complained that South Africa was failing to do enough to protect foreign nationals, though it now insists it has quelled the violence.

Nigeria has summoned Acting High Commissioner Martin Cobham along with Deputy High Commissioner Uche Ajulu-Okeke. “for consultation” over the “ongoing xenophobia”, Minister of Foreign Affairs Aminu Wali said in a statement carried by media on Saturday.
The statement acknowledges that South African President Jacob Zuma has condemned the attacks. In its response, South Africa’s Department of International Relations and Co-operation points out that “a government resorts to such an extraordinary diplomatic step to express outrage at actions or behaviour of another government.
The statement says South Africa has not blamed Nigeria “for the deaths and more than nine (9) months delay in the repatriation of the bodies of our fallen compatriots” in attacks by Boko Haram militants. The statement insists that the South African government and citizens have been “decisive and unequivocal in condemning and rejecting the attacks on foreign nationals” and insists that “through our interventions, relative calm and order has been restored”.
On Friday, President Zuma met over 50 leaders of organisations representing foreign nationals in South Africa for talks about how to avert any repeat of the attacks. Next week, the South African parliament is to be suspended to allow deputies to press the anti-xenophobia message in their home constituencies.

85-YEAR OLD PASTOR REMARRIED 74-YEAR OLD WOMAN!

Reverend Moses Iloh, a fiery social critic and founder of Soul Winning Chapel in Yaba, Lagos did the unusual last Sunday when he took his wife, Pastor Edith Iloh to the altar for a second wedding after 50 years of solemn matrimony.
The usual wedding ceremony was witnessed by a huge crowd of relations, eminent clerics, admirers and other members of the society including the presiding bishop of The Redeemed Evangelical Mission, TREM, Dr. Mike Okonkwo, founder of Nigerian Advance Party, NAP, Dr. Tunji Braithwaite, his wife and other prominent Nigerians.
Dr. Iloh, who hails from Imo State is 85 years old while his Anambra State-born wife is 11 years younger. The two lovebirds could pass for a young couple, especially with their youthful gesticulations and juvenile mannerisms during the wedding ceremony conducted by their children.
Although the couple actually tied their nuptial knots 50 years ago, last Sunday’s ceremony was unique for two reasons; their age coupled with the fact that the former ceremony was observed by their parents who gave their consent but the April 20 event was officiated by their children.
Last Sunday’s ceremony, according to the couple, was to celebrate God’s faithfulness and show appreciation to their children who have contributed immensely to the survival of their ministries. Like most marriages, the 50-year marital voyage cannot be described as an all round rosy one, but by the grace of God, the couple had been able to weather the storm.
At last weekend’s ceremony which took place at the Soul Winning Chapel, Ebute Metta, Bishop Okonkwo who preached the only sermon of the day, acknowledged that no marriage is free from challenges but God is always out to make things work out if only couples can depend on Him.
Quoting from Psalms 34:1, the cleric said there are broken marriages because many couples are often unaware that the Devil is against many homes and are unwilling to pay the needed price to keep the union work.
Okonkwo said the Ilohs were pointers to the fact that marriages still work in Nigeria. ”The Devil may tell you your marriage will not work but the fact remains that if it works for the Ilohs, then it will work for you. Let me tell you, every marriage has its challenges but God makes the difference. This couple had occasions to quit their marriage but they didn’t because they have a direction. The Devil likes to intimidate people by telling them about the impossibilities in marriages but that does not mean you should quit. Fear will stop you from attempting what naturally you could have attained,” he noted.
The bride, a former teacher with Ijero Baptist School, Apapa, Lagos, said her marriage to the cleric was an answer to prayers; ”I had prayed to God to give me a man who will love, cherish and pamper me and God gave me somebody who is 11 years older.” She was in the junior team of the Red Cross Society while her husband was in the senior team where they met.
”I was not a strong Christian at that time but there were some attributes I wanted in a man; a man who I will help to fulfil his destiny and I thank God he was caring although he was very busy but God gave me the grace to cope. He is a man of the people and he likes taking risks. Our first baby was delivered shortly after the war but God saw us through,” she explained.
The 74-year old bride used the occasion to urge younger women to be patient at home, saying ”marriage is not a bed of roses. Couples should realise this so that they don’t truncate God’s purpose for their families.”
Going down memory lane, Dr. Iloh said it took him four years to get her parents’ consent because they did not know his background while the tradition did not permit a chief’s daughter to marry outside her kindred.

”As a young man, I was so occupied to the extent that I had no time for women. Her father was a chief and the tradition did not permit her to marry outside her kinsmen but we were able to surmount the obstacle and the union has been a smooth one till date. I married her to love and cherish her. All my concern was to blend her to my vision which I achieved,” he maintained.
In a chat, a lawyer, activist and founder of Nigerian Advance Party (NAP), Dr. Braithwaite, who spoke about the state of the nation, said the incoming administration has a great task ahead.
“They have inherited a lot of mess because corruption has greatly destroyed this country. Among the members of the incoming administration are chieftains of corruption. They must endeavour to take the country to a greater cause in order to enjoy credibility of the election which is needed to rule this nation,” he stated.

Couple Dies In Car Crash While Delivering Wedding Invitations

Mariusz Dudek and Dominika Lewandowska, both 24, from Obroki, Poland, had been looking forward to their wedding day in May this year with great anticipation, as they prepare and plan towards it.

But all their dreams have been cut short as they were both killed in a car crash as they were driving to another town to deliver their wedding invitations to friends and family.
The couple were involved in a head on collision with a car driven by a Catholic priest, Father Gregorz.
The two young lovers described as inseparable by their friends, have left their families mourning the sad loss.
Witnesses told police that the priest tried to overtake a tractor and plowed right into the couple’s Audi, which was driving in the opposite direction. The couple and the priest were pronounced dead at the scene.
A police spokesperson said that the couple had wedding invitations in the back of the car and police have established that they were delivering them to guests.
A police spokesman said:

Xenophobia In South Africa-Why I took photos before trying to save murdered Emmanuel Sithole-Photographer

Should he have helped instead of take pictures while a man was stabbed to death? That's the big question, as the photographer who captured the brutal murder of a Mozambique immigrant in South Africa has reacted to the backlash over his decision to take pictures  instead of trying to save victim.

James Oatway witnessed the stabbing and beating of  Emmanuel Sithole  by four men in Alexandra township near Johannesburg on Saturday. Many slammed the journalist of not doing enough to prevent Mr Sithole's death.Responding to the criticism, Mr Oatway told radio 702's John Robbie:
'It's not easy to look at and I understand that some people might be offended by that.'But really people have to know what's happening, and people have to see the brutality and the vulgarity of what's going on.'I think that people who are angry with me for taking the pictures... should try and direct their anger at the men that are responsible for the attack and not at me.'
'The one regret that I have was that the first clinic that we took him to weren't equipped to treat him.We did lose some valuable time taking him out of the car there, taking him into the clinic and then the nurses told us that there's no doctor there.

'They put a gauze dressing on his wound and then we put him back in the car, but that whole process took about 10 minutes.'

A Colorado Teacher share heartbreaking Notes from Third Graders Student

PHOTO: Schwartz encourages other teachers to use the same lesson in their classrooms.

Kyle Schwartz teaches third grade at Doull Elementary in Denver.

Although she says her students are a pleasure to look after, the educator of three years adds that many of them come from underprivileged homes.
"Ninety-two percent of our students qualify for free and reduced lunch," Schwartz tells ABC News. "As a new teacher, I struggled to understand the reality of my students' lives and how to best support them. I just felt like there was something I didn't know about my students."

In a bid to build trust between her and her students, Schwartz thought up a lesson plan called "I Wish My Teacher Knew."
For the activity, Schwartz's third graders jot down a thought for their teacher, sharing something they'd like her to know about them.
"I let students determine if they would like to answer anonymously," she says. "I have found that most students are not only willing to include their name, but also enjoy sharing with the class. Even when what my students are sharing is sensitive in nature, most students want their classmates to know.

"Some notes are heartbreaking like the first #iwishmyteacherknew tweet which read, 'I wish my teacher knew I don't have pencils at home to do my homework.' I care deeply about each and every one of my students and I don't want any of them to have to suffer the consequences of living in poverty, which is my main motivation for teaching."
Blown away by her class' honesty, Schwartz shared some of the notes on Twitter using the hashtag #IWishMyTeacherKnew, encouraging fellow teachers to employ the same lesson with their own students.

The tweets and photos of notes from other schools came pouring in from around the world.
"I think it caught on so fast because teachers are highly collaborative and freely share and explore resources," Schwartz says. "In the end, all teachers want to support their students, and #iwishmyteacherknew is a simple and powerful way to do that.

"Building community in my classroom is a major goal of this lesson. After one student shared that she had no one to play with at recess, the rest of the class chimed in and said, 'we got your back.' The next day during recess, I noticed she was playing with a group of girls. Not only can I support my students, but my students can support each other."
Schwartz says she also hopes her lesson can help her connect students and their families with the proper resources they need to live comfortably.
