Arsenal sign Sweden midfielder Kim Kallstrom on loan

Kim Kallstrom has joined Arsenal on loan from Spartak Moscow until the end of the season, as Arsène Wenger moved to strengthen his midfield options in the wake of Aaron Ramsey's injury setback.
Ramsey, the club's best player over the first half of the season, suffered a recurrence of his thigh problem when he returned to training earlier in the week and Wenger said the Welshman could be out for six weeks. Ramsey picked up the original injury at West Ham United on Boxing Day.
With Mathieu Flamini banned for three matches after his sending-off at Southampton on Tuesday and Jack Wilshere struggling with yet another ankle knock, albeit a minor one on this occasion, Wenger turned to Kallstrom. The Swede has top-level experience, a strong work ethic, is comfortable on the ball and dangerous at set-pieces. The 31-year-old, previously of Djurgarden, Rennes and Lyon, has 108 caps for Sweden. Kallstrom began his medical at the club on Friday lunchtime.
Wenger has Tomas Rosicky available again for the visit of Crystal Palace on Sunday, after complications arising from an operation to repair a broken nose and either he or Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain will partner Mikel Arteta in central midfield.

Wenger believes that Wilshere will be fit for next Saturday's Premier League trip to Liverpool. "I hope it [the injury] will be short term," Wenger said, while the manager has allowed the midfielder Emmanuel Frimpong to join Barnsley on a permanent deal. It was Ramsey's injury, though, that preoccupied Wenger. "Ramsey will be [out] between four to six weeks and I count six so I have no bad surprise. Of course, it's a blow for us because we recently lost [Theo] Walcott for a long period [the season] and now Ramsey is out for a long period. It's a big setback."

Arsenal's manager said of his new signing: "Kim Kallstrom is a hugely experienced player. He is a midfielder with proven quality at both club and international level."

UK Archbishops Criticise Nigerian And Ugandan Anti-Gáy Laws

The Archbishops of Canterbury and York have written to the presidents of Nigeria and Uganda, after being asked about laws there penalising gáy people.

The letter said homoséxual people were loved and valued by God and should not be victimised or diminished.
Nigeria and Uganda have both passed legislation targeting people with same-séx attraction.
The letter is also addressed to all primates (heads of national Churches) in the worldwide Anglican Communion.
Archbishops Justin Welby of Canterbury and John Sentamu of York said the letter was a result of "questions about the Church of England's attitude to new legislation in several countries that penalises people with same-séx attraction".
'Draconian'
In Nigeria this month, President Goodluck Jonathan signed into law a bill which bans same-séx marriages, gáy groups and shows of same-séx public affection.
In Uganda, a bill allowing for greater punishments for gáy people, and those who fail to turn them in to police, has been passed by parliament, but blocked - for now - by President Yoweri Museveni.
The laws have been heavily criticised by gáy and human rights groups.
UN human rights chief Navi Pillay described the Nigerian law as "draconian".
She said she had rarely seen a piece of legislation "that in so few paragraphs directly violates so many basic, universal human rights".
In their letter, the archbishops reiterated their support for a document known as the Dromantine Communique, published in 2005 by the primates of the Anglican Communion.
The communique said:
"We continue unreservedly to be committed to the pastoral support and care of homoséxual people.
"The victimisation or diminishment of human beings whose affections happen to be ordered towards people of the same séx is anathema to us.
"We assure homoséxual people that they are children of God, loved and valued by Him and deserving the best we can give - pastoral care and friendship."
'False gospel'
Archbishop Welby's stance on homoséxual relationships has created tension with more traditionalist Anglicans.
Last October, he held talks with members of the Global Anglican Future Conference (Gafcon), which condemns those who preach what it calls a "false gospel" claiming God's blessing for same-séx unions.
Archbishop Welby has said some gáy couples have loving, stable and monogamous relationships of "stunning" quality.
But he says he still supports the Church of England's formal opposition to active homoséxuality.

Football Loses A Legend: Portugal Hero Eusebio Dies At The Age Of 71

Portuguese football legend Eusebio has died at the age of 71.
The forward scored an incredible 473 goals in 440 matches for Benfica, the Portuguese giants with whom he spent most of his career and won the European Cup in 1962.
He also scored 41 goals in 64 appearances for the Portugal national team, helping them to third place in the 1966 World Cup in England – a tournament in which he was top goalscorer with nine goals.
He memorably scored four goals in the 5-3 quarter-final win over North Korea at Goodison Park.
A spokesman for Benfica said: ‘We have just received confirmation of the death of Eusebio. It’s a very sad day for all of us.’
The club were unable to confirm details of Eusebio’s death but reports in Portugal say he died of a cardiac arrest in the early hours of Sunday morning.
He had been in poor health for some time and was hospitalised during Euro 2012 after suffering a heart scare in Poland.

16-Year-Old Girl Locked In A Cage For Two & Half Years By Her Parents Over Alleged Witchcraft Illness

Tongues have begun to wag in Bayelsa following the discovery of a 16-year-old girl, Blessing Olokumo who had been locked up in a cage for the past 30 months by her parents over an alleged witchcraft induced illness.

Saturday Sun gathered that the cage that has housed the victim for two and half years is just by the Niger Delta University Teaching Hospital in Okolobiri community, Yenagoa Local Government Area of the state.  She was rescued from the cage few days ago by the Mary Slessor Twins Foundation.
The group, led by its acting president, Mr Robert Ebitei Tonye, disclosed that preliminary investigations revealed that Blessing was diagnosed with an illness nine years ago which triggered convulsion.
Findings by Saturday Sun revealed that when Blessing was taken to the hospital for medical attention nine years ago, the parents were asked to pay N15, 000 for her treatment. It was further learnt that the father, who said he could not afford such medical bill, requested her to be discharged and signed a form that he was taking her from the hospital against medical advice.
He was said to have later taken her to different traditional homes for her illness to be cured and when no solution was forthcoming, especially when she defecates and vomits in the house, he decided to construct a cage where she was kept.
Concerned neighbours, who have watched in horror the maltreatment Blessing was subjected to, alerted the group known for its campaign against maltreatment of twins in the state.
The first day the group went to the house to rescue her, Tonye said some strange occurrences and the blunt refusal of the father to hand her over, prevented the group from rescuing her. But on its second mission, they succeeded and immediately took her to the Okolobiri hospital.
While lamenting the condition of the teenager, Tonye said:  “She was kept like a rabbit. She was given food when it was available and was allowed to sleep in her vomit, feces and urine. She lost weight and could have died”.
At the Okolobiri hospital where she is kept, many who visited her described her parents’ action as wicked and callous.
Speaking further on the incident, Tonye said: “The father told us that the girl has been sick for 13 years and since she refused to die, she was locked up. We rescued her and took her to the hospital. Our pre-occupation is to stabilize her condition before we ensure we press charges against the parents”
Scared that he could be arrested, it was gathered that Olokumo has already  gone underground. The mother, Mrs Olokumo, who now stays with her at the hospital, lamented that they have spent all their money to get solution to her problem.
According to her, since they could not get money to get her proper medical attention, they decided to give up and she allowed the father to handle it.
Dr Oyedeji Adeyemi of the NDUTH, who is attending to her, explained that her case is that of seizure disorder which was not properly treated.
“The case is principally a case of a child having a seizure disorder in what some people would call epilepsy which in technical terms is seizure disorder which was not treated appropriately. Rather than give her medical attention, she was kept out of the house, sort of restricted environment and barely fed which had over time led to malnutrition”, Adeyemi stated.
Some civil society groups have already concluded plans to give all the necessary support to the Mary Slessor Twins Foundation to see that Blessing’s parents do not go free for the act of inhumanity to their own child.

Meet first female president of the Central African Republic

Interim President, Central Africa Republic, Catherine Samba-Panza

After years of crisis and political violence, Central Africa Republic began the first phase of its transition to democratic civilian governance by electing Catherine Samba-Panza to act as an interim President.
A study of the political history of the country showed that Samba-Panza is the first female to become the president of the country.
She emerged after former president, François Bozize, was presurised to stepped down by the international community amid violent clashes between Muslim and Christian groups.
Who is Samba-Panza?
The 59-year-old former Bangui mayor was born on June 26, 1954 in Fort Lamy, Chad to a Cameroonian father while her mother was from CAR.
She studied law in France where two of her three children still live. Before getting into politics, she worked as a corporate lawyer. She was also active in a women’s rights organisation.
Ms. Samba-Panza succeeds CAR’s first Muslim leader Michel Djotodia, who resigned on January 10 after being put under pressure by regional leaders and the former colonial power, France, over his failure to curb the conflict.
She is a Christian but the successful businesswoman is seen as politically neutral. Samba-Panza was the Chairwoman of the National Dialogue in 2003 which was established to address conflict in the region.
She was appointed mayor of Bangui by the National Transitional Council during the 2012 -2013 conflict.
Her appointment was accepted by both sides in the conflict as she was viewed as politically neutral.
How she emerged
She was elected as the top candidate amongst seven contenders in a vote by the transitional parliament on Monday. Samba-Panza won 75 votes in the run-off, against 53 for Mr. Kolingba, the son of a former president.
The election went to a second round after Ms. Samba-Panza failed to secure an outright majority in the first round. Six other candidates were knocked out in the first round. Among them were two women and two sons of former presidents.
They all had to meet the stringent requirements set by the National Transitional Council. All those who had held political offices under previous interim president, Michel Djotodia, as well as all party leaders and active members of the military were not allowed to run for the presidency. Also among those excluded from the top job were members of militia groups.
About 129 members of the 135-seat council took part in the secret ballot, AFP reports.
Task ahead of the new president
Central African Republic leader, Catherine Samba-Panza, faces tough challenges as the country’s new interim president. She faces a huge task of bringing peace between Muslim Seleka fighters and the Christian anti-balaka militias.
As interim president, she is required to organise a general election by 2015; as well as facilitating the return of hundreds of thousands of refugees to their villages and restoring a functional government.
CAR has to hold a fresh election by February 2015 at the latest. France, however, wanted the election to hold this year. Current law excludes the interim president from running.
What people say about her
According to the French Catholic daily newspaper, La Croix, the news of her appointment as interim president was well received by most Bangui residents.
In the eyes of the business community, Samba-Panza is the right person for the job. Development and human rights organisations have also welcomed the appointment of the first female to such a high profile job in CAR.
Her first request
The first request made by the female president was to plead with the Christian militias, known as anti-balaka and Muslim fighters in the ex-Seleka rebel movement to end the bloodshed.
In her victory speech, she said, “I call on my children, especially the anti-balaka, to put down their arms and stop all the fighting. The same goes for the ex-Seleka – they should not have fear. I don’t want to hear any more talk of murders and killings.
“Starting today, I am the president of all Central Africans, without exclusion,” she is quoted by AFP

FA CUP: Arsenal won Coventry city

Embedded image permalink

Arsenal eased into the FA Cup fifth round thanks to Lukas Podolski's two goals against Coventry City
Mesut Ozil fed Podolski, who rounded keeper Joe Murphy to fire home, and the striker added a close-range header from Per Mertesacker's flick-on.

League One side Coventry rallied in the second half, with Leon Clarke hitting the post, but Olivier Giroud ended any doubt with a third from 12 yards out.

And Santi Cazorla got a late fourth from a similar range.

BREAKING NEWS: LASU Shut Down Indefinitely

Management of the Lagos State University (LASU) have taken the decision to halt the activities of the state-owned educational facility indefinitely. The development follows what the LASU university officials described 'violent protest by the students'.
"In the wake of the violent protest by some affected students of Lagos State University (LASU) over the closure of the university portal for registration of courses for rain semester 2012/2013 examination, the university management has decided to shut down the university indefinitely," the bulletin titled LASU management Closes University indefinitely and dated January 23, 2014, reads. "Also, examinations have been put off till further notice. With this decision, students are expected to vacate the university premises until further notice."
The initially peaceful protest has been staged by the students on Wednesday, January 22. They decried the failure of the University Management to reopen the registration portal for over a thousand students who are yet to register. However, on Thursday, violence erupted. Participants destroyed cars, other properties, and allegedly threw stones at the University Vice Chancellor Prof. John Obafunwa despite the presence of men of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) on the site.
The university’s Acting Director of Press and Public Relations Unit, Dr. Sola Fosudo, explained that the measure was taken to allow normalcy to return. He said the management resolved to address all the major problems that may have triggered the protest.
Also, Lagos State House of Assembly summoned the Special Adviser on Education Mr. Fatai Olukoga, the Governing Council, management staff of the university and the students' union leadership to appear before the House on Friday.
The Chairman, Committee on Education, Science and Technology, Wahab Alawiye-King appealed to the University authorities to reopen the portal for two days to enable the students to register and sit for the examination.
Aftermath
The police stormed the campus with over 20 patrol vans and two APCs. According to eyewitnesses' accounts, the policemen fired teargas canisters at students injuring many. It was learnt that two students have been transferred to the Ikeja General in critical condition.
However, Area E Commander in charge of the Ojo, Assistant Commissioner of Police Dan Okoro denied the allegations, suggesting the students sustained injuries while trying to break the windows to the VC's office and windshields of some cars.
The university's two entrance gates have been locked up and blocked by policemen who placed their vans in and around the campus. The students were asked to vacate the university immediately.
The Education Rights Campaign, has called for the immediate withdrawal of the police from the university and the establishment of a democratic process to hold discussions with the aggrieved students and the university’s union body.
Below are the pictures from the scene of the protest. Warning: some images depict violence.

World’s richest football clubs revealed

London: Two Gulf-owned football clubs rank among the richest in the world, according to Deloitte’s annual money list.
Qatari-owned Paris Saint-Germain made the biggest growth in 2012-13, shooting up from 10th to 5th.
And Manchester City, owned by Abu Dhabi’s Shaikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, moved one place up the rankings to sixth place, aided by their sponsorship deal with Etihad Airways.
Man City’s turnover rose by 17 percent to 271 million pounds ($449 million) despite the team failing to win a trophy last season.
Income at PSG soared by 180 percent to 398.8 million euros ($540 million) as it won the French league for the first time in 19 years. The club’s global profile was enhanced by David Beckham’s four-month spell in the France championship-winning team.
The largest part of PSG’s income last season came from commercial deals that yielded €255 million. Its sponsors include airline Emirates, kit supplier Nike and the Qatar Tourism Authority.
“We expect to see them become a mainstay in the top five in years to come, backed by their ambitious Qatari owners and strong commercial support,” said Austin Houlihan of professional services firm Deloitte.
“The high-profile signing of David Beckham in the second half of the 2012-13 season only served to enhance the club’s worldwide profile. Importantly, commercial success off the pitch is translating into improved on-pitch performance for the club.”
Real on top
Real Madrid and Barcelona are football’s biggest moneymakers for the fifth straight year, while Manchester United lost its place among the top three biggest-earning clubs for the first time.
United, which is enduring a lackluster season under new manager David Moyes, dropped to fourth behind European champion Bayern Munich in the Football Money League compiled by accountancy firm Deloitte.
Two English Premier League rivals are directly below Manchester City on the list, with Chelsea seeing turnover drop slightly to 260 million pounds ($431 million) and Arsenal’s rising to 243.6 million pounds ($404 million).
Madrid stayed top for the ninth straight year after revenue rose slightly to 518.9 million euros ($703 million), while Spanish rival Barcelona had revenues of 482.6 million euros ($654 million).
“Real Madrid remain firmly at the top of the Money League, even though the club experienced a trophyless end to the 2012-13 season,” said Dan Jones, a partner in the sports business group at Deloitte. “Despite tough economic conditions, particularly within Spain, the club’s ability to generate substantial commercial revenue both domestically and internationally is central to their success.
“This helped widen the gap to their nearest rivals in the Money League, Barcelona, to 36 million pounds. Both Spanish clubs enjoy substantial revenue from individually negotiated broadcast deals, which is key in contributing to their overall revenue advantage over their European peers.”
In Germany, Bayern’s income leapt 17 percent to 431.2 million euros ($584 million) as the German club won the Champions League, Bundesliga and German Cup.
United’s growth was slower - 13 percent to 363.2 million pounds ($602 million) - as the team collected the Premier League title before manager Alex Ferguson retired in May.
“It is the first time Manchester United have dropped out of the top three but Bayern had an exceptional year,” Jones said. “Next year United will have the Chevrolet (shirt sponsorship) deal plus other new commercial deals in their figures, and the new Premier League TV deal so we are confident they will be back in the top three.”
But in the Premier League, United is seventh, 14 points behind leader Arsenal, with a fight to secure one of the four Champions League spots.
“The longer term depends in part what happens on the pitch and if they do not qualify for next season’s Champions League that is probably worth 50 million euros directly in terms of money from TV and attendances at Old Trafford,” Jones said.

The Second Coming Of Jesus Is A Doctrine Every Muslim Must Believe, Says Imam

abuja_central_mosque
The Imam of Federal College of Technology, Yaba Mosque, Imam Saeed Salmon has said that contrary to some belief by Muslims, Islam also subscribes to the widely held Christian belief that Jesus Christ will return in what has been described as his ‘second coming’, emphasising that any Muslim, who does not believe in it, is not a true follower of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).
Salmon, who spoke at a special lecture held at the Lagos Central Mosque, Tinubu, said Jesus is a messenger of God and would still return to a mosque in Damascus.
“The second coming of Jesus Christ is a doctrine that every Muslim must believe. The teachings of Prophet Muhammad talks extensively about this.
“The Qua’ ran Chapter 4:157-159 teaches this but the teachings of Islam does not support that Jesus was killed or resurrected, rather, he was raised by Almighty Allah to his majesty.
“Jesus is coming again to refute the claim of the Jews that he was crucified and to correct the doctrine of the Christians that he is the son of God.
“Again, the second coming of Jesus is to establish that there is a close relationship between Prophet Muhammad and Jesus himself”, he said.
The Chief host and organiser of the lecture, Amir Ajala Kamardeen, noted that he is under obligation as a true adherent of Islam, to educate the public and to correct any misconception about the religion.
“Jesus is a prophet and messenger of Allah and as a true Muslim, we are bound to believe all prophets of Allah.
“The holy book ,Qur’an points to the fact that the second coming of Jesus Christ is a sign of end time but there are some group of Muslims in Harvard University and in Cairo known as the fatimists and also Ahmadists who are saying otherwise, so, I have put it upon myself to correct them”, Amir Kamardeen added.

LASU students protest against poor facilities

LASU-students-protest
Students of the Lagos State University, Ojo, on Thursday continued their protest at the Ojo campus of the institution.
Our correspondent learnt that the students were protesting against the poor facilities in the school, despite what the students described as the huge school fees collected from the students.
Most of the students claimed to have paid about N250,000 as school fees. They kicked against the shut down of the school registration portal, which they said meant that some students, who could not complete their registration before the portal was shut down, would have an extra academic year.
Unconfirmed report said scores of people had been wounded as some of the students attempted to take over the major roads around the university campus.

2,000 Nigerian youths apply for Obama African leadership programme

No fewer than 2,000 Nigerians have applied for the US President Barack Obama flagship programme for promising young African leaders tagged: “Young African Leaders Initiative”.
The Cultural Affairs Officer, US Embassy, Mr Bill Strassberger, made this known in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Wednesday in Abuja.
The Obama administration created YALI in 2010 as a means of prioritising US government efforts to empower the next generation of African leadership.
Strassberger said that 25 per cent of the completed applications for the 2014 Washington Fellowship for YALI came from Nigerians, out of 8070 applications submitted as at Jan. 10.
According to him, 35,000 applicants are still in the process of completing their applications.
He said that 500 selected YALI Fellows from Africa would travel to the U.S. in mid-2014 to participate in a six-week programme at a US university.
Strassberger said that out of the 500 selected YALI Fellows, Nigeria, Kenya and South Africa were expected to contribute 150 youths with other African countries making up the numbers.
In 2010, three Nigerians – Mr Bako Kantiok, Miss Ruth Audu and Mr Taiwo Adewole, were among the 115 young leaders from Africa that participated at the Obama’s young African leaders’ forum.
Obama declared during the forum that he believed “Africa’s future belongs to its young people.”
He challenged African youths to stand against non-democratic African leaders, work for change and bolster democracy on their continent.

Hayatou denied Mikel African award — Father

Mikel

Pa Michael Obi, the father of the Chelsea star, Mikel, has blamed the President of the Confederation of African Football, Mr. Isa Hayatou for his son’s failure to win the African Footballer of the Year award.
The CAF/GLO African award was given to Yahaya Toure, with Mikel and Didier Drogba finishing in second and third places respectively.
He said not only he, but all Nigerians, were just waiting for the pronouncement of Mikel as the winner, adding that his friends from Jos and Lagos were just on the wings waiting to call and congratulate him before the name of Yaya was announced.
Pa Obi, who spoke in an exclusive interview with our correspondent in Jos on Wednesday, said that the CAF president had always exhibited a dislike for footballers from Anglophone to those from the Francophone countries.
He however said that the family was not perturbed that their scion did not get the award because of their firm belief in God and that at God’s own appointed time, Mikel will get the award. He said that the fact that Mikel congratulated the winner immediately and flew back to his base without any complaint was reflections of the family’s belief in the hands of God in the destiny of man.
He said, “We know that it was he, Issa Hayatou that denied him that award. Yaya himself said so that his friend was worthy to take the award.
“We were there; all gathered around the television watching what was happening and I saw all that happened. Some friends had started phoning me from Lagos and Jos, especially from Lagos, waiting to say congratulations to me because everybody had in mind that Mikel would be the person to win the award. But I think with Hayatou, the CAF president, it became impossible. Not that I think, he did it because some papers wrote to him that since he had been on that seat, Nigeria had not enjoyed such things.
“But all I know is that I am somebody who does not get worried about certain things. If you observe, you can see what I have written on our transport vehicles, ‘God’s Time is the Best’,” Pa Obi said

Attempt to Ban JW.ORG Fails

JANUARY 21, 2014 | RUSSIA

UPDATE: Attempt to Ban JW.ORG Fails

ST. PETERSBURG, Russia—On August 7, 2013, the Tsentralniy District Court of the city of Tver, located 100 mi (approx. 160 km) north of Moscow, ruled that the Bible-education website jw.org should be banned throughout the Russian Federation.
Although jw.org is consulted by hundreds of thousands around the world and is highly regarded by researchers, the court sided with officials seeking to ban the popular website. The court rendered its decision without notifying or taking any testimony from the publishers of the site, the Watchtower Bible and Tract Society of New York. Jehovah’s Witnesses are appealing the decision to the Tver Regional Court. The appeal is scheduled to be heard on January 22, 2014.
If the appeal is denied, the website will no longer be available to the over 160,000 Jehovah’s Witnesses in Russia, who regularly use the website for religious services and in personal and family Bible study. Promoting the website will then become a criminal act in Russia. Additionally, some 142 million people living in Russia will be restricted from consulting jw.org for free information about the Bible. Commenting on the website, Yekaterina Elbakyan, Doctor of Philosophy and expert in religious studies who serves as a professor at the Academy of Labor and Social Relations in Moscow, says that jw.org is “a gift for anybody who is engaged in religious research. It provides comprehensive and understandable material. Significant spiritual and moral issues are presented in a simple way. When you use the website, you feel like you are being openly welcomed into the home of Jehovah’s Witnesses.”
Speaking from St. Petersburg, Grigory Martynov, a spokesman for Jehovah’s Witnesses in Russia, states: “The jw.org website is a wonderful tool for those in our country searching for information about the Bible and is not politically or commercially affiliated in any way. We hope that the Tver Regional Court will ensure that this popular educational resource remains available for all Russians.”
J. R. Brown, a spokesman for Jehovah’s Witnesses at their world headquarters in New York, comments: “The jw.org website is valued both as a research tool and as a trusted information source for families all over the world. It is so valued that an average of 900,000 people visit the site every day to access positive information available in some 600 languages. Censoring this material is clearly unwarranted.”

Landlord Demands Séx From Woman In Exchange For Flat

The man asked a 24-year-old woman to have séx with him before he would let her rent his apartment, Sweden.
A landlord demanded a woman have séx with him before he would allow her to rent out his flat.
The man, who has not been named, published an advert for his apartment in Malmo, Sweden, it was reported.
But when a 24-year-old woman replied, she was told the landlord expected to have séx with her if she were to have any chance of getting the flat.
He added that he expected this arrangement to continue throughout her tenancy.
The woman did not reply again and instead reported the matter to the police.
"It's about the demands for séxual favours both before she got permission to rent the flat and then continued demands for the duration of time that she would live there," Linda Pleym, information officer of the Malmö police said.
Police are treating the case as blackmail and séxual moléstation. It is not known if other applicants were also asked about séxual favours.

What is ginseng? What is ginseng used for?

Ginseng is any of eleven different species of short slow growing perennial plants with fleshy roots. Ginseng plants belong to the genus "Panax" and the family "Araliaceae".
The herbs consist of a light-colored, forked-shaped root, a relatively long stalk and green leaves with an oval shape.
Ginseng is believed to restore and enhance normal well-being, and is currently one of the most widely bought herbal supplements.
This Medical News Today information article provides details on the history of ginseng and its uses. In addition, the article highlights any side effects or complications associated with its consumption.
Both American ginseng (Panax quinquefolius, L.) and Asian ginseng (P. ginseng) are believed to provide an energy boost, lower blood sugar and cholesterol levels, reduce stress, promote relaxation, treat diabetes, and treat sexual dysfunction in men.
It should be noted that Siberian Ginseng (Eleutherococcus senticosis) is not a true ginseng and doesn't belong to the genus "Panax". It does belong to the Araliaceae family of plants, but consumers should be aware that it is not the same as American or Asian ginseng.

History of Ginseng

The word Ginseng comes from the chinese term "rénshen", which literally translates into "man root". It is thought to have been given this name because the root of the plant looks like the legs of a man.

China

Ginsengpflanze
Panax Ginseng grew wildly in the mountains
of Manchuria.
Over five thousand years ago, in the mountains of Manchuria, China, Panax ginseng was commonly used for its rejuvenating powers.
The herb was considered to be a symbol of divine harmony and its human shape was highly desirable.
The benefits of ginseng were first documented during China's Liang Dynasty (220 to 589 AD).
Chinese legend has it that early emperors used to use it as a remedy for all illnesses and not only consumed it, but also used it in soaps, lotions and creams.
In the third century A.C., China's demand for Ginseng sparked huge international trade of the herb from other parts of the world - in exchange for silk etc.

North America

Panax quinquefolius range map
American Ginseng was found all over eastern
North America.
In 1716, a Jesuit priest in Canada heard that Ginseng was extremely sought-after in China, so he searched for the herb in areas of French Canada - environmentally similar to Manchuria.
After three months of searching he finally found a herb nearly identical to Asian ginseng near the city of Montreal - the herb he found became known as American Ginseng.
Soon after the discovery of American Ginseng, botanists and herbalists found that it was common all over the deciduous forests of the eastern United States. The export of ginseng from North America to China began to explode.
However, the herb was over-harvested in the mid-1970s and soon became considered an endangered species.
Since farmers began cultivating the sensitive herb in the 1970s, American Ginseng trade has been growing steadily.
Currently, the state of Wisconsin, in particular Marathon County, produces nearly 95% of American Ginseng. The herb is also widely grown in the province of Ontario, Canada.

Anti-Gay Law Fallout: Canadian Government Cancels Nigerian President Jonathan’s State Visit

A state visit being planned by Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan to Canada for February has been canceled by the Canadian Government.

The cancelation happened in the same week it was revealed the President secretly signed a controversial law banning gays, lesbians, and sexual minorities in Nigeria.

Sources in Abuja told Sahara reporters that the Nigerian Ambassador to Canada, Ojo Madueke, was told to inform President Jonathan that the state visit to Canada scheduled for February 13 and 14th 2014 has now been canceled.

Nigerian Gays To Protest In Abuja

Nigerian gays and lesbians, under the aegis of ‘The Right Defense’, are daring President Goodluck Jonathan, and would soon stage a demonstration in Abuja, the Nigerian capital, they said in a statement on Saturday.

The protest is against the anti-gay law signed by the president on January, 7.
They added to the statement the masked pictures of themselves noting they were protesting against an “undemocratic and unlawful discrimination” of gays and lesbians and trans-genders in the country.
The demonstration in Abuja, they said, has become necessary to condemn what they call “an increase in threats against fundamental human rights of certain persons including LGBT in the country.”
According to the group, they also want to challenge the existence of the Nigeria human rights body, the National Human Right Commission “for its lack of integrity and principle in the fight against discrimination and violation of individual rights.”
The group said many Nigerians have in the past fled the country due to threats to life and harassment in their communities. Those who have fled include Alimi Bisi, Philip Temidayo Adabayo, Desmond Patric, Nkechi Ugo, Lara Abiodun Akinniyi, Simeon Demola Adesanmi, Penu K. Z.
“The planning for the unviolent rally is to avert the continuous attacking of the unarmed citizens and the unlawful and arbitrary arrest of wanted individuals,” the group said.

Catholic Nun Gives Birth, Names Baby After Pope

What is happening? Another shocking scandal has been recorded in the heart of the Catholic church...

A nun who said she had no idea she was pregnant gave birth in Italy this week after she felt stomach cramps in her convent and was rushed to hospital for proper treatment, Italian media reported on Friday.
The 31-year-old nun and her baby boy, who weighs 3.5 kilogrammes (nine pounds), are doing well and some new mothers in Rieti hospital have begun collecting clothes and donations for her, the reports said.
“I did not know I was pregnant. I only felt a stomach pain,”
The Salvadorean nun was quoted as saying at the hospital. La Republica said she gave birth on Wednesday.
ANSA said the nun had named her baby Francesco (Francis) — which is the new pope’s chosen title and one of the most popular names in Italy, where St Francis of Assisi is the much-loved national patron saint.
The nun, who is yet to name the man who impregnated her, belongs to the “Little Disciples of Jesus” convent in Campomoro near Rieti, which manages an old people’s home and reports said she would keep the baby.
Her fellow nuns say they were “very surprised” by what has happened.

Our skit wasn’t to hurt Jim Iyke –Helen Paul

Helen Paul
Few months after actor, Jim Iyke, was allegedly ‘delivered’ at the Synagogue Church of All Nations, Lagos, the ripple has yet to die down, especially after comedian AY turned it to a skit.
The controversial actor had commented on the skit which also featured Helen Paul, saying, “People cross the lines sometimes for relevance. It disappoints if it comes from people you deemed to have self respect. Classless.”
But reacting to the actor’s misgivings, Helen said the skit was just a joke and not necessarily meant to hurt Jim Iyke even as the video has gone viral.
“It is just a joke. I am an actress and a senior colleague called me for a job. I was given the script and I acted my part. We did not mean to hurt Jim Iyke. In the skit, I was portrayed as a prostitute but that is not what Helen Paul is about,” she said.
She added that the alleged ‘deliverance’ was something that was talked about a lot and that was probably why he was mentioned in the skit. She emphasised that the skit was purely for humour purpose and not malicious in any way.
However, ace comedian, AY said he would not comment on the issue as he and Iyke are friends. Saturday Beats gathered that when the video went viral and the news broke early in the week, the comedian known for his hilarious skit contemplated on a response but later said that he and the actor were friends and would settle their differences like friends do.
Online commentators who found the joke as funny were quick to lash insults at Jim Iyke as they made it known that it was just a comedy skit and nothing serious.
The video had thousands of views on YouTube and Jim Iyke’s comment came a few weeks after the comedian’s channel was ranked as the number one most watched channel in Africa.

Van Persie and Rooney to miss United’s trip to Chelsea

vanpersierooney

Manchester United will again be without Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie when they go to Chelsea on Sunday.
Rooney is back in England following warm-weather training, but his groin injury has not healed in time for the weekend.
And van Persie, who has played just twice since November 10, will not return to training until next week – by which time United could be 14 points off top spot in the Premier League.
Speaking at his press conference ahead of Sunday’s trip to London, Moyes said: “Wayne’s come back fresh but not ready for Chelsea.
“He’s doing some running and looking good. He’s had a break, done some strengthening work on his groin. Hopefully he’ll benefit, but not for this game.”

Can I drink while on medication?

To find out the facts we spoke to our Chief Medical Advisor, Professor Paul Wallace.
We asked Professor Paul Wallace why doctors sometimes tell us not to drink when we take prescription drugs, and what happens if we do. Professor Wallace says it depends what medication you have been prescribed. For most, it is fine to drink within the government’s daily unit guidelines. However, for some, alcohol should be completely avoided.
Professor Wallace says that:
  • People taking sedative drugs (like diazepam/Valium) or antidepressants (like fluoxetine/Prozac) should avoid alcohol altogether
  • People taking long-term medications should be careful about drinking, as alcohol can make some drugs less effective, meaning long term conditions get worse. Examples include, people taking drugs for epilepsy or diabetes, or drugs like warfarin to thin the blood.
  • There are some antibiotics which simply do not mix with alcohol - drinking with these will make you sick. But for most commonly prescribed antibiotics, drinking is unlikely to cause problems so long as it is within the daily unit guidelines
  • There’s no evidence about the effects of alcohol on your immune system – the benefits of a hot toddy are probably all in our head.
Read on to find out more about all of the above.

How alcohol can interfere with medication

Professor Wallace says there are two main reasons why doctors advise patients not to drink with some drugs.
“Firstly, because alcohol is a depressant, it affects the way your brain works, numbing your senses so they don’t operate properly,” he says.
“Some types of medication also affect the way your brain works, and if you’re drinking alcohol there will be a conflict. Alcohol will increase the sedative effects of both, causing sleepiness and dizziness. It could also change the way the brain responds to the medication, making it less effective.”
If you’re taking a sedative drug such as diazepam/Valium, or any other drug that can make you drowsy, and you drink alcohol, your reaction times could decrease and you’ll get tired faster. If you’re driving or operating machinery, this can be extremely dangerous.
“Secondly, alcohol can affect the way drugs are absorbed by the body and broken down in the liver,” says Professor Wallace.“
If you drink alcohol regularly and especially if you drink excessive amounts, your liver produces more enzymes so that it can get rid of the alcohol more quickly. Those same enzymes might break down the medication you are taking so it no longer has the same effect. An example of this is medications for epilepsy".

Alcohol and antibiotics

When it comes to antibiotics, Professor Wallace says that the message is slightly different than it is with sedative drugs. The NHS advises that people who choose to drink alcohol when taking antibiotics do so within the daily unit guidelines. (1)
There are antibiotics, like Metronidazole and Tinidazole, which you should not drink alcohol with.  Mixing them with alcohol can lead to nausea, vomiting, flushing of the skin, accelerated heart rate or shortness of breath. This is because they can interfere with the breakdown of alcohol, leading to the production of nasty side effects (2).
There are a wide variety of antibiotics available, penicillin and amoxicillin are the most widely used. All of these can have different interactions with alcohol, and, as with any medication you should always consult with your doctor or pharmacist about the guidelines regarding consumption.

Statins and alcohol

Statins are drugs which are taken to lower the levels of cholesterol in your blood.  High levels of ‘bad cholesterol’ can increase the risk of developing cardiovascular disease due to fatty deposits building up in your arteries.
According to the NHS there are no known interactions between statins and alcohol (3). However, consumption of statins can occasionally result in an increase in liver enzymes, which if left unchecked can lead to liver damage. It is therefore important for those taking statins to stay within the government’s daily unit guidelines and to have their liver function tested periodically. As with any medication, you should always consult the guidelines of consumption with your doctor.
What is an alcohol unit and how many is too many?

Can alcohol make you better?

So, can alcohol itself ever be a good medicine? Historically it once had a very important medical application, says Professor Wallace.
“Before the advent of modern anaesthetics, when surgeons were performing operations, they would use alcohol as an anaesthetic, getting their patients drunk before they operated,” he explains. Professor Wallace says the reason for this is because alcohol numbs the brain.
He explains that many people also feel better after having a hot toddy when they have a cold because alcohol also numbs your senses; a hot toddy can make you feel better but there’s no evidence to suggest that it actually improves your health.
“Nobody should kid themselves that it is going to help you actually get better,” says Professor Wallace. “You may experience an immediate gain because if you are feeling rotten alcohol might make you feel less bad for a short time. But the term ‘medicinal brandy’ is an oxymoron.”

Alcohol and the immune system

There’s no firm evidence about the effects of alcohol on the immune system, but Professor Wallace thinks it’s probably not a good idea to drink alcohol when you are feeling ill because it is likely to make you feel worse. “Our state of mind can affect the way we respond to illnesses and alcohol is, after all, a depressant,” says Professor Wallace.
Can alcohol ever be good for the heart?

Finding out if you can drink on your medication

If you’re taking prescription drugs and are unsure whether it is safe to drink alcohol, the best advice is to check with your doctor and the pharmacist. Also check the leaflet that comes with the medication.
“If it doesn’t say 'Don’t drink alcohol' it’s probably okay to drink within the daily unit guidelines," says Professor Wallace. "But if you are in any doubt, don’t drink alcohol at all because you could put your health at risk

I am not quitting music for politics –9ice

9ice

Popular singer, Abolore Akande, aka 9ice, has denied online reports which claim that he was quitting music.
The singer who recently announced his intention to run for the Ogbomosho North Federal Constituency seat in his home town in Oyo State, southwest Nigeria in 2015, says he does not plan to leave music anytime.
An obviously infuriated 9ice tells E-Punch, “I am preparing to release a double album this year. We released five songs yesterday (Wednesday) and also shot a video. We plan to release another one on Friday. I am tired of these false reports, I can’t count how many times that 2face was rumoured to have died, yet he is still alive. It is so annoying and for the record I am still doing music full time. I just had my Industry Night on Wednesday night. So where are all these stories emanating from?”
The controversial viral quoted the artiste as saying, “I’m leaving music, I need to go into something more challenging. Music is no longer competitive for me, I’ve done all that needs to be done in music”
