An over-excited football fan stripped to his underwear and sprinted the entire length of the pitch to take a selfie with his team’s goalkeeper. The supporter was so pleased to see his beloved Southport score a 35-yard goal, pulled off his clothes, leapt over the advertising board and dashed onto the pitch.
Video footage taken at the game shows the young man clad in only white boxer shorts and dark socks racing down the pitch during the match with Welling United at Park View Road stadium in south east London last Saturday. As he reached the goal post, the fan then took a selfie with Southport’s on-loan goalkeeper, Tony Thompson – much to the amusement of the over 1,000 crowd. After the selfie, the pitch invader managed to dodge stewards who tried to catch him before escaping into the crowd.
The invasion happened during the second half of Southport’s one-nil victory over Welling in the Conference National division – English football’s fifth tier – and the footage was uploaded to YouTube by the home club’s video analysis team. The goal which sparked the exuberant celebration was scored by midfielder Steven Hewitt and secured Southport’s survival in the Conference.
