Nigeria’s Interior minister, Abdulrahama Dambazau disclosed on Wednesday that Nigeria’s Federal Government has approved the sum of N3.5bn for the purchase of 320 vehicles for the Nigerian Prison Service. The interior minister also disclosed that the car will be procured by local manufacturers, giving the rationale for their purchase as the high number of inmates awaiting trial who need to be transported to court.
It is curious that the Nigerian Prisons service has chosen to spend such a sum on vehicles as opposed to improving the security at prisons. There have been at least four reported attempts of jailbreaks across Nigerian prisons in 2016 alone.
