Nigerian Drug Peddler Battles 11 Indian Cops As He Tries To Resist Arrest

It took 11 Indian policemen to subdue and arrest a Nigerian drug pusher near a garden at MiniSeashore in Mumbai, in the Indian state of Maharashtra.

According to a report by The Times of India, the accused, Nwafor Igwe Chima, was found in possession of 263 gm of methaqualone powder also called as ‘MD rock’, worth around Rs 5.26 lakh(about $8,000), on Thursday night.

The stocky Nigerian resisted arrest by pushing away three cops and attempting to flee. Eight policemen were then called in to subdue the Nigerian, who reports said had turned ferocious.

Since July 2015 till date, the Vashi police claims to have arrested as many as 16 Nigerians from Juhugaon, Koparkhairane and Ghansoli areas, for various criminal offences, said senior inspector Ajay Landge.

In Delhi too, some Nigerians have also been arrested for drug running.

Last week, a Nigerian was among the three suspects arrested by the Delhi police over drugs.

The accused were identified as Uchenna (28), from Nigeria, Indian Ajay (33) and his associate Naresh Kumar (39), from Mohan Garden in west Delhi’s Uttam Nagar.

The Hindu newspaper said as much as 170 grams of cocaine and 590 grams of fine-quality heroin estimated to be worth a consolidated amount of ₹2 crore, about $320,000 in the underground drug market were seized from the trio, said Ravindra Yadav, joint commissioner of police (crime).

On Tuesday this week, India’s Kullu police brought a Nigerian drug kingpin, identified as Okechukwu Mathew to Manali after arresting him in Delhi.

The police team according to The Times of India also seized 1.55kg heroin, worth Rs 4 crore in international market, from his rented house in New Delhi on Monday night.

The arrest was made following a tip off from a drug peddler nabbed from Manikaran area on February 11.

Manali police had jailed the Nigerian, identified as Okechukwu Matthew, earlier in 2014 after arresting him with 20g cocaine. He was released in 2015. The accused used to supply small quantities of drugs, mostly in tourist places, with help of peddlers on commission basis.

On February 6, India’s Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) recovered 1.3 kilograms of fine quality Colombian cocaine stashed in 90 capsules from the stomach of a Nigerian , who had come to Delhi from Lome, Togo.

According to The Times of India, the accused was taken to hospital where an X-ray confirmed the presence of foreign bodies in his stomach.

He was kept in the hospital for two days during which he expelled 90 capsules containing 1.3kg cocaine.

The Nigerian was identified as Monday Tony Okonkwo. He arrived IGI airport in an Ethiopian Airlines plane on February 6.

In January, a Nigerian drug convict, John Okoro, who fled from police custody was re-arrested.

Okoro, 35, was re-arrested by the Anti-Narcotics Cell (ANC) of Mumbai police.

ANC sources told The Times of India that Okoro was arrested from the Navi Mumbai area, from where he was planning to flee to Mangalore by a private bus.

Police source said Okoro, who resided in Koparkhairane in Navi Mumbai, was arrested in 2014 in a drug case.

The court convicted him for a three-year jail term. Okoro was sent to Nashik central prison after conviction. He was billed for deportation when he jumped out of his detention centre.

Internet Shutdown in English Zone of Cameroon Costs $1.39m

A coalition of rights groups monitoring internet outage has disclosed that Businesses in Cameroon have lost over $1.39 million as the internet shutdown in the country enters a fourth week.

The government ordered the suspension of internet services to the English speaking North-west and South-west since January 18 as lawyers’ and teachers’ strike escalated into violence.

In a letter to the Cameroon firms, it says the conservative estimate did not take into account the long-term effects such as the disruption of supply chains and the significant amount of remittance that Cameroons living abroad sent to the affected regions.

We write to urgently request your support in restoring internet access in the South West and North West regions of Cameroon.

The lobby group said it had earlier informed the government that the shutdown violated human rights.

“We write to urgently request your support in restoring internet access in the South West and North West regions of Cameroon. We ask that you publicly identify the steps you are taking to restore access to the internet in Cameroon,” the letter reads.

The mobile voice and data service companies in the country is yet to officially comment on the statement.

African largest mobile network MTN Cameroon, a subsidiary of the South Africa telecom giant, is the biggest network in the country with a 51 percent market share.

FG Orders Investigation Into Why Big Brother Nigeria Is Being shot in South Africa

Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, has directed the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) to investigate why the ongoing Big Brother Nigeria Reality Show is being shot in South Africa.

In a statement in Abuja on Tuesday, Lai Mohammed said the NBC should determine whether Multi-Choice, by shooting the show in South Africa, has breached the Nigerian Broadcasting Code in any way, as well as the issue of possible deceit, since the viewing public was never told that the event would be staged outside Nigeria.
”As a country of laws, only the outcome of the investigation will determine our next line of action,” he said. Lai Mohammed said while concerned Nigerians have bombarded his office with calls to complain about what they regard as an anomaly (of shooting outside the country a show meant for Nigerians), they should remain calm while the NBC investigates the issue and submits its findings.

Dubai Hotel Warns Instagram Models To Stop Taking Semi Nude Photos in There Hotel

A plush five star hotel in Dubai has complained that scantily-clad Russian Instagram models are ruining its family-friendly reputation.

The Waldorf Astoria Dubai Palm Jumeirah - where a suite costs more than £1,000 - now wants to ban flesh-baring models from using the name of their hotel in a hashtag or sharing their location on social media, Daily Mail reports.

It comes after a group of Russian models flaunted their assets in the hotel as part of a photo shoot for designer Anna Chibisova's brand D'AngelAnn.

They included model and TV presenter Victoria Bonya, 37, actress Anna Kalashnikova, 44, and TV reality star Alena Shishkova, 24.Hotel managers have complained the model's revealing selfies and suggestive photographs have given the wrong image of the hotel.

A spokesman for the hotel said:

'This is an Arab country. We have had a lot of complaints from families with children.

'We do not want to see our location [coming up on social media] on photos of girls in semi-naked and erotic poses. Let the photograph simply state the location as Dubai.'

Cameroon Has Shut Down The Internet in English-Speaking Regions

Internet connections have been completely shut down in the northwest and southwest of Cameroon, its two main English-speaking regions as a long drawn out mass protest against marginalization by the French-speaking led government persists.

Internet users in the affected parts of the country found out they could no longer communicate and disseminate information particularly on social media. No prior notice had been given by the government before the internet blackout.

The shutdown came less than two hours after government outlawed the activities of two Anglophone pressure groups—Southern Cameroons National Council and the Cameroon Anglophone Civil Society Consortium. Two leaders of the Consortium, Barrister Nkongho Felix Agbor and Dr. Fontem A. Neba, were arrested same day in Buea and airlifted to the nation’s capital Yaounde.

Cameroon’s current difficulties stem back to its pre-independence history when it was formed from a region that was colonized by the British with the region run by the French. Its government, education, and legal systems are dominated by the larger French-speaking region. In recent years tensions have mounted as people from the Anglophone regions have complained about being marginalized by the Francophone-led establishment. The Anglophone regions account for just under 20% of the Cameroon’s 23 million population.

African governments have been at the forefront of internet shutdowns in the last two years. Last year shaped up to be “the year of internet shutdowns,” as at least 11 African governments interfered with the internet during elections or protests. More people are having to figure out how to stay online during such shutdowns.

Cameroon authorities were easily able to impose the shutdown due to the fact the country’s optic fibre backbone is operated by a state owned corporation, Cameroon Telecommunications (CAMTEL). Other mobile network and internet service providers; MTN Cameroon, Orange Cameroun and Nexttel rely solely on CAMTEL’s optic fibre to service their subscribers.

Cameroon’s Ministry of Post and Telecommunications is said to have handed down firm instructions to the various network service providers to strictly implement the shutdown.MTN Cameroon, which is a leading operator in the affected areas, sent messages to its subscribers, acknowledging the internet blackout and stating that it was due to “circumstances beyond their control.”

Customers of commercial banks, micro-finance institutions and money transfer agencies, which make use of internet, have confirmed the internet block in the main towns of Bamenda, Buea, Kumba, Limbe and Kumbo. Buea in particular has been nicknamed Silicon Mountain, for its small but burgeoning tech startup ecosystem and local universities which sit in the shadow of Cameroon’s Mount Fako.The internet has largely been used as a tool for mobilization in the wake of mass protests which have been characterized by ‘Ghost Towns’. Principally two Cameroonian social media activists, Mark Bara and Tapang Ivo Tanku, have been using Facebook and Whatsapp to mobilize aggrieved Anglophone Cameroonians from abroad.

Many believe the government’s move is an attempt to circumvent internet planning and communication through social media. It has prompted a #BringBackOurInternet campaign from Cameroonians in regions unaffected by the shutdown. Prior to the shutdown, government embarked on a campaign of sending warning messages to all phone users in the country.After pictures suggesting government neglect following the Eseka train accident last year, the Biya regime attempted to cut off social media—Facebook, WhatsApp and Twitter in the country. But it failed in its attempt, apparently due to limited knowhow.

According to reports, Issa Tchiroma Bakary, the country’s Minister of Communications then negotiated with the mobile telephone and internet providers operating in the country to suspend service for some time.

There are no indications that the reinstatement of internet connection west of Cameroon will take place any time soon.

MMM Issues Instructions To Members Ahead Of Resumption

On preparation for its expected return on January 14, the Ponzi scheme Mavordi Mondial Movement (MMM) promoters have issued instructions to its participants whose accounts were frozen, to perform “Promo Tasks: A New Tool for MMM Community Development.”

The MMM message to subscribers said the tasks, which should be done both online and offline, will promote the scheme and drive “traffic and participation” by the time the restriction on the account is lifted.“Being an MMM member implies not only opportunities, but also a responsibility for the state and development of the MMM Community”, the message said.The information raises hopes of the almost three million Nigerians who invested in the scheme, following the ban on withdrawals on December 3, 2016.

On January 2, the scheme on its official Twitter handle, @MMMNigeriaHelp disclosed that participants’ accounts will be unfrozen on January 14.

Some of the participants have taken to social media to give reasons why the scheme should return.

MTN Fires Top Executive, Amina Oyagbola Over Alleged Bribery.

South African telecom giant, MTN, has fired one of its top and most valuable staffers in order to avoid scrutiny by the United States government over alleged bribes offered to Abba Kyari, Chief of Staff to President Muhammadu Buhari.Read according to Sahara Reporters;

Shortly after helping to resolve a hefty fine imposed by the Nigerian government, Amina Oyagbola was so important to MTN that the company gave her two strategic positions. Her corporate elevation saw her combining leadership of the Human Resources department with the post of "Director of Strategic Communications" at MTN.

Ms. Oyagbola and her husband were instrumental in resolving MTN's serious problem with the Nigerian Presidency culminating in a massive $5.2 billion fine imposed on the company for ignoring the Nigerian government’s directive to ensure that all SIM cards were registered as a strategy to curb Boko Haram insurgency in Nigeria's northeast.

An insider within the company and other sources in Abuja told our correspondent that, once the fine was imposed, Ms. Oyagbola recruited a close friend, Femi Lijadu, to act as a consultant for “strategic advisory services.” In that capacity, Mr. Lijadu was a member of the team that negotiated with the Federal Government to reduce the fine to $1.7 billion. One of our sources said Ms. Oyagbola and Mr. Lijadu once worked with presidential Chief of Staff, Abba Kyari at the United Bank for Africa.

Once the fine was reduced to about a third of the original sum, Ms. Oyagbola’s corporate star seemed to soar. However, MTN last week told her to step down from one of her two corporate positions. A source at MTN claimed that Mrs. Oyagbola decided to resign.

However, another source within the company told Saharareporters that the once powerful corporate player was fired after MTN’s bribe scandal with Mr. Kyari came to the notice of the MTN's parent company in South Africa. The source added that the decision to relieve Ms. Oyagbola was taken in order to avoid the consequences of a global disgrace should US authorities ask questions related to the company’s reported offer of an undisclosed sum as bribe to Mr. Kyari before the senior presidential aide helped broker a deal that lowered the fine earlier imposed by the government.

Donald Trump appoints Bayo Ogunlesi to Strategic and Policy Forum

President-elect Donald J. Trump today announced that he is establishing the President’s Strategic and Policy Forum. The Forum, which is composed of some of America’s most highly respected and successful business leaders, will be called upon to meet with the President frequently to share their specific experience and knowledge as the President implements his plan to bring back jobs and Make America Great Again. Three Suspected Internet Fraudsters Arrested In Ibadan

The Oyo State Police Command has arrested three suspected internet fraudsters.

This is contained in a statement issued on Wednesday in Ibadan by the Police Public Relations Officer in Oyo State, SP Adekunle Ajisebutu.

Ajisebutu said that the arrest of the suspects was made possible following a tip off by members of the public.

He said that the suspects were picked up in their hide out at Soka area of Ibadan at about 6:30am on Wednesday by the command’s Anti-Kidnapping Squad.

“The suspects, who had been elusive for some time now, were eventually arrested after several days of intelligence gathering and painstaking investigation carried out by the police.

“During interrogation, the suspects confessed to being internet fraudsters and that they had defrauded many innocent victims they referred to as ‘clients’ of their hard earned money in naira and foreign currencies.

“They also disclosed that they often used charms to facilitate their illicit business.

“This they did by hypnotising victims and ‘commanding’ them to part with their dollars and valuable properties,’’ the police spokesman said.

Ajisebutu said that the suspects further disclosed that those who had fallen victims included foreign nationals and Nigerians alike.

“Exhibits recovered from them included four assorted laptops and assorted criminal charms.

“The Commissioner of Police, Samuel Adegbuyi, has directed that discreet investigation be carried out about their other nefarious activities at the end of which they would be arraigned in court,’’ he said.

He advised youths to shun crime and engage in legitimate businesses, saying the police were determined to prosecute unrepentant criminals in the state.

Dr Jacobs told newsmen in Abuja on Wednesday, November 16, that it was rather early to predict what the economic outlook of Nigeria would be in respect to the U.S. election. “It is likely that the country may receive less material, moral and political support. “Policies and programmes of the Republican government might also not be favourable to some Nigerian illegal immigrants, based on the campaign speeches of the President-elect,”Jacobs said.

Jacobs said that such immigrants, especially non professionals, would be a burden on the country when they return. According to him, Nigerians have contributed to the building of the American economy over the years, adding that Nigerian professionals had been making waves in the US.

“If such professionals return to Nigeria, they will help to develop the country in various professions. “Their activities may also help to salvage the nation from the current recession and build a virile economy, ” he added. During his campaign, U.S. President-elect, Donald Trump, had taken a swipe at political leaders in Africa on account of the level of corruption and economic backwardness on the continent.
Trump said African leaders were bad examples for leadership and recommended that the continent be re-colonised. “In my opinion, most of these African countries ought to be recolonised for another 100 years, because they know nothing about leadership and self governance.” Meanwhile, former minister of aviation Femi Fani-Kayode has congratulated the President-elect of the United States of America Donald Trump. Fani-Kayode’s congratulation to Trump comes after his release from Kuje prison in Abuja on Monday, November 14. The former minister was remanded in Kuje following an order from Justice John Tsoho of the Federal High Court after he was arraigned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for money laundering charges. Speaking to journalists at the court after perfecting a N50 million bail condition given to him, the former minister congratulated the Trump on his victory. Fani-Kayode who has been an ardent supporter of Trump said the US, Africa and indeed Nigeria will benefit from the leadership of the new US President-elect. Supporting Trump, Fani-Kayode said the new American president-elect will not tolerate religious fundamentalists and human right abuses.

PRESIDENT Muhammadu Buhari has been asked to resign from office by the country’s vibrant Social Media Opposition bloc, the Wailing Wailers.

Calling for the President’s resignation on Twitter, Wailing Wailers, in a statement signed by Usman Abubakar, its national publicity secretary, said President Buhari has no single achievement ever since he was sworn in on the 29th of May 2015.

The call for Buhari’s resignation resonated with Nigeria’s youthful and social media savvy demography hence a record 4,536 tweets in one hour.
