The United States of America has condemned the postponement of Nigeria’s presidential and parliamentary elections, alleging “political interference” with the country’s electoral commission.

“The United States is deeply disappointed” by the decision to move the elections from February 14 to March 28, Secretary of State John Kerry was quoted as saying by dpa in a statement issued at the weekend.

“It is critical that the government do not use security concerns as a pretext for impeding the democratic process,” Kerry said. Nigeria’s main opposition All Progressives Congress said the postponement was “a major setback for Nigerian democracy” and called on Nigerians to “desist from violence” in order to not “fall into this obvious trap.

The electoral commission in Nigeria, the Independent National Electoral Commission, justifies the postponement with security concerns in the north-east, where the Islamist group Boko Haram is waging a terror campaign. But the opposition believes President Goodluck Jonathan wants to gain time to sway support from the opposition, which has been going up in opinion polls.

Don Jazzy and I have discussed the possibility of business reunion – D’banj

A few years after the break-up of Mo Hits Crew and a few weeks after he blamed Dr Sid for the group’s break-up, Dapo Oyebanjo aka D’banj has revealed that he could still work with his former producer Don Jazzy.

D’banj, who bared his mind in a recent interview on Olisa Adibua’s chat show The Truth, said: “I know that everyone wants me and Don Jazzy to work together again and I think there is a possibility of that happening, if the price is right.

I bumped into Don Jazzy in America and we discussed the possibility of a reunion, a business reunion. Don Jazzy told me that it would have to be for the right money for that to ever happen.”

The singer who recently celebrated his 10th anniversary as an entertainer insisted that he had had great success since leaving Mo’Hits.

According to him, he won awards, travelled the world, had the most downloaded song in 2013 and reached the point where he wanted to “expand and do something new”.

He made clear that the fact that he hasn’t been spending all his time in Nigeria has not made him less successful.

He also debunked claims that his new song Feeling the Nigga was written for Akon and that he made a cameo appearance in it. He explained that though he featured Akon in the remix of the song, “both songs are mine”.

Chad troops enter Nigeria to fight Boko Haram

First ground offensive launched by Chad against Nigerian rebels in bordering town of Gambaru after days of air-strikes.

Chadian troops have crossed into northeastern Nigerian town of Gambaru to launch a ground offensive for the first time against Boko Haram fighters that control the town bordering Cameroon, Chadian military sources have said.

Fighting between the two sides began after armoured vehicles and soldiers from Chad entered the strategic Nigerian town on Tuesday in an increasingly regional conflict.

"Our troops entered Nigeria this morning. The combat is ongoing," one of the sources at Chad's army headquarters told the Reuters news agency.

Chadian forces have also taken up position close to Boko Haram strongholds along Nigeria's border with Niger.

"A contingent of about 400 vehicles and tanks is stationed between Mamori and Bosso," Niger's private radio Anfani reported.

The ground offensive followed days of intense combat between Boko Haram fighters and Chadian forces in Cameroon, during which Chad's air force carried out strikes on the rebels, Chadian and Cameroon military sources said.

Boko Haram fighters had launched attacks across the border bridge from Gambaru into Cameroon, the sources said.

Nigeria's military said the country's sovereignty was not compromised despite the presence of Chadian ground troops on its territory.

"Nigeria's territorial integrity remains intact," Defence spokesman Chris Olukolade said, claiming national forces had "planned and are driving the present onslaught against terrorists from all fronts in Nigeria, not the Chadian forces".

Chad has deployed some 2,500 troops as part of a regional effort to take on the armed group that has waged a rebellion in Nigeria's north, killing an estimated 10,000 people last year. The group says it wants to establish an Islamic state in Africa's biggest oil producer.

Major supply route

The road from Gambaru to Fotokol in Cameroon is one of Boko Haram's major supply routes. It has been hampered since Cameroon deployed special forces to the area in mid-2014, leading to fierce fighting in the area.

The Nigerian government said on Monday that Gambaru alongside several other towns in the region including Mafa, Mallam Fatori, Abadam and Marte had been liberated from Boko Haram.

In a further sign of mounting international action to combat the militant group, France said on Tuesday that French military aircraft are carrying out surveillance missions to help countries bordering Nigeria tackle Boko Haram.

The African Union (AU) has authorised a force of 7,500 troops from Nigeria, Chad, Cameroon, Niger and Benin to fight the rebels.

Taiwan passenger plane crash-lands in river

Plane hits a road bridge and crashes, killing nine people, as rescuers try to reach dozens of trapped passengers.

A passenger plane with 58 people on board has plunged into a river outside the Taiwanese capital Taipei, killing nine people, according to national media reports.

About 16 people were rescued, but dozens were still trapped inside, reports said.

The TransAsia ATR 72-600 turboprop plane was on a domestic flight when it hit a road bridge before crashing into the river, the reports said. Rescuers were trying to reach the trapped passengers, they said.

Television footage showed passengers wearing life jackets wading and swimming clear of the river.

Emergency rescue officials in inflatable boats crowded around the partially submerged fuselage, lying on its side in the river, trying to help those on board.

The civilian aeronautic authority said soon after the crash that two people had been killed. Taiwanese television later reported the death toll had risen to nine.

The aeronautic authority reported 16 people had been rescued, meaning as many as 33 people were still missing, according to the Reuters news agency.

Other Taiwanese government authorities said the plane was carrying 58 passengers and crew, including 31 tourists from mainland China, the agency said.

The weather appeared to be clear when the plane took off. Television pictures also showed some damage to a bridge next to the river, with small pieces of the aircraft scattered along the road.

The crash-landing is the latest in a string of mishaps to hit Asian carriers in the past 12 months. An AirAsia jet bound for Singapore crashed soon after taking off from the Indonesian city of Surabaya on December 28, killing all 162 people on board.

Also last year, a Malaysia Airlines jet disappeared and one of its sister planes was downed over Ukraine with a combined loss of 539 lives.

TransAsia is Taiwan's third-largest carrier. One of its ATR 72-500 planes crashed while trying to land at Penghu Island last year, killing 48 of the 58 passengers and crew on board.

The plane involved in Wednesday's mishap was among the first of the ATR 72-600s, the latest variant of the turboprop aircraft, that TransAsia received in 2014.

They are among an order of eight placed by TransAsia in 2012. The aircraft have 72 seats each. The planes are mainly used to connect Taiwan's capital, Taipei, to the island's smaller cities.

Nigerian doll created by man who couldn't find a black toy for his niece is so popular in his country that it's outselling BARBIE

A man who couldn't find a black doll in the shops as a gift for his niece decided to take matters into his own hands.

In 2007, Taofick Okoya, 43, created his own doll that Nigerian girls could identify with by recreating their skin colour and style - and it is now so successful that it is outselling Barbie
.

The doll, which is called Queens of Africa, comes with traditional outfits and accessories and costs around £4.50.

The dolls' look is modelled on three of the country's biggest tribes and aims to promote strong feminine ideals, like love, peace and endurance.

The doll is now so popular that, according to Reuters, it is selling up to 9,000 units a month - a staggering 15 per cent of the country's toy market.

But the Queens of Africa aren't just selling in their home country.

Thanks to the doll's online presence, customers are coming from as far as America, Brazil and Europe.

Speaking to ELLE about his dolls out-selling Barbie in his native Nigeria, Okoya said: 'My mission is to make the Queens of Africa a symbol of hope, trust, and confidence by promoting African history, culture, and fashion.'

One person that Okoya really hopes the dolls will have a positive impact on is his daughter, who, he explains, once wished she was white.

Okoya said: 'I don't believe Mattel sees the Nigerian market as a priority, yet their product has great influence on the psyche of the children here and affirms certain values contrary to our society'

He explained that even though they live in Nigeria, there was a lot of Western influence. He said: '[This] might have been responsible for her wishing she was white. It made me aware that I needed to make her proud and happy being a black African girl, and not limit it to her alone as this was a common trend among the younger generation. The Queens of Africa became a platform to achieve this.'

Unfortunately, Okoya has been told that he won't be able to sell the dolls on the shelves of mainline stories in America and will have to limit his business to specialist stores. 

But he is determined to see the decision overturned, he said: 'I am looking to prove them wrong.'

Passengers on a double-decker bus which had its roof ripped off by a tree have told how they thought the vehicle had been targeted by a bomb. 

Startled passengers have told how the tree's branches cut through the vehicle 'like a knife through butter', scraping off the bus's roof to leave upper-floor seats and handrails visible outside. 

Five people were injured in the 'freak accident' on the 91 bus in Kingsway, Holborn, with one man left with a broken nose. 

One woman, sitting on the lower deck, said she thought the crashing she heard had been caused by a bomb.The bus was going down towards the college when I heard a big bang and felt a jolt and the bus came to a halt,' said Darcey Delaproser, a full-time carer. 

'I thought it could have been a bomb. I didn't expect it.

'We could see wires coming down the stairs. A fellow passenger and I went up the stairs to see what had happened. That's when I knew the roof had come off.

'The whole thing was cut off as though it had been sliced by a knife, like a knife through butter. If there had been anyone standing up on the top deck, they wouldn't stand a chance.'

The 51-year-old said there were five to six people on the top deck and about 12 or 13 people on the bottom.

 'It's a good thing the bus was quite empty, otherwise it could have been a lot worse.

'I saw one man with blood pouring from his nose get down of the top deck.. An elderly couple were on the top deck, they were in shock.

'There was a woman at the back, she was in shock. I think she was injured.

'I'm still in shock, I'm still trying to get my head around it. I'm definitely very lucky to be ok.' 

Builder Billy Comfort, 21, who was working across the road from the scene, said: 'I saw the bus drive into a tree and the roof came off.

'It was a bit shocking really.'

Llewelyn Hill was sitting on the bus's upper deck when the tree crashed through the windows.

'I got showered in all sorts of stuff, glass and whatever, and I instinctively ducked and when I looked up the roof was gone,' the 45-year-old told the Evening Standard. 

'The roof was literally just gone and in front of me a couple of metres ahead of me there was a chap on the floor. I think he'd been thrown off his seat and he was bloodied in the face. 

'There was pandemonium on the top deck and I heard a few screams but other than that most people were checking everybody was OK.'
